Remote ADHD medication follow-up with Amnicare

Karlskrona’s CS (central stimulantia) clinic eases drop-in pressure and boosts patient safety.

Since winter 2024, the Adult CS clinic in Karlskrona has been using Amnicare to digitally monitor treatment with central stimulants for patients showing ADHD symptoms. The result? A smoother, more structured care process for both healthcare professionals and patients.

From manual processes to digital oversight

Traditionally, medication follow-up is a time-consuming and administratively heavy task involving numerous phone calls and in-person visits. With Amnicare’s program features, the CS clinic has automated and standardized its follow-up routines.

Instead of spending an entire day trying to reach a patient by phone, I can now just send a message through Blåappen. It saves a lot of time that can be used for other tasks. I also find that most patients actually prefer getting a message over a phone call. In other words, it’s a smoother and better experience for everyone!

Helena also notes that a lack of response in Amnicare can signal that something isn’t right, such as a patient having stopped their medication. This way, Amnicare helps the healthcare professionals identify early warning signs and act proactively, ultimately improving care quality and patient safety.

solution to growing healthcare demands

The CS clinic was established in spring 2023 in response to a rising influx of ADHD patients. The existing team could no longer keep up with all the follow-ups, leading to the creation of a drop-in service to relieve pressure. But demand kept growing, and it became clear that an additional solution was needed.

After comparing different digital tools, the clinic chose Amnicare. A pilot began in spring 2024, focusing on ADHD medication follow-up. The road wasn’t entirely smooth. First challenge? Navigating Amnicare’s extensive content in the library and narrowing it down to the most relevant tools. The next step was setting up clear routines, appointing a Amnicare administrator, and building confidence in the new approach.

To succeed, you need two things: time and interest. It’s an investment, but once everything’s in place, it saves both time and frustration in the daily work.

How it works today

  1. Patients are enrolled during their annual check-up, after being assessed as suitable for digital follow-up.

  1. A one-time set of assessments, tailored to the patient's treatment, is sent out.

  1. When the responses come in (typically after six months), they’re documented and used as the basis for prescription renewal.

  1. After that, a recurring and fully automated yearly program in Amnicare begins.

A one-time setup that, over time, creates a standardized and automated workflow.

Digital communication with clear structure

Upon registration, the patient receives a notification explaining what to expect, when the next form will arrive, and that they’re always welcome to ask questions via the chat function. Here, digital messages are treated the same as phone calls in terms of documentation and billing, solving a long-standing issue around how to journal and charge for follow-ups.

The CS clinic has also established clear routines for checking Amnicare for new responses, this happens every Monday and Thursday. For patients who don’t respond, there’s a automatic and stepped reminder process before they are referred back to the drop-in service.

New way of working and care experience

For healthcare personnel, Amnicare means a more efficient and structured way of working. For patients, it offers flexibility, clarity, and a sense of involvement. In other words, more person-centered care.

Patients appreciate being able to respond when it suits them. There’s less stress, and they avoid waiting in drop-in queues.

What’s next?

The clinic is now exploring how more parts of ADHD care can be digitized. For instance, for patients who begin treatment within child and adolescent psychiatry and later transition to adult care. Amnicare is also currently used in the clinic’s sleep school, where it’s a well-liked platform for managing sleep diaries, assessments, and other activities in a smooth and accessible way.

In summary, the team continues to build routines and confidence among colleagues, with the goal of making Amnicare an even more integrated part of their daily work.
